Feather Family is an open-ended bird simulation and roleplay experience on Roblox developed by The Feather Family. Instead of linear quests, combat objectives, or leveling grinds, the game lets you morph into dozens of real and prehistoric avian species, customize your plumage, build nests, raise chicks, and explore diverse biomes alongside other players.
To play effectively, you need to understand core movement, how passive feather income works, and how to manage social mechanics like flocks and family raising.
Basic Controls and Flight Mechanics
Movement in Feather Family changes depending on whether your bird is classified as a regular flyer, a flightless runner (such as the Kiwi, Ostrich, or Penguin), or a hatchling. Flying birds require an initial takeoff input, after which you steer using your camera and standard direction keys.
| Action | Computer (PC) | Mobile | Console (Xbox / PlayStation) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Run / Sprint | Shift | Run Button | X / Square |

Note that console players cannot view or write player bios, name customization save slots, or view flock names due to platform-specific user-generated content policies.
Choosing Your Bird and Customization
When you join a server, the character select screen presents you with starter options, unlockable birds, and game pass birds.
Life Stages and Starter Species
You can begin your life cycle as an Egg, a Hatchling, or a fully grown Adult. Hatchlings cannot fly immediately and must interact with the growth prompt to mature into full-sized adults.
Standard birds are accessible immediately for all players at zero cost. Starter species include:
- Egg
- Sparrow, Mourning Dove, Cardinal, Finch, Canary, Crossbill, Robin, Starling, Myna
- Chicken (Leghorn, Silkie, Polish variants)
- Duck (Mallard, Mandarin, Muscovy variants)
- Goose (Canadian, Chinese variants)
- Quail, Turkey, Swan, Pheasant, Partridge
Customization Options
The Character Creator allows you to recolor specific body zones including the beak, eyes, primary feathers, secondary feathers, chest, and talons. Opening the Advanced menu unlocks full RGB and HSV sliders. You can also adjust scale (which dynamically adjusts call pitch—larger birds have deeper calls), apply body markings, select surface textures, and save configurations across 12 distinct save slots.
How to Earn Feathers and Unlock Birds
Feathers serve as the primary currency in Feather Family. You do not need to complete quests or defeat enemies to get them.
- Passive Generation: You earn Feathers automatically just by staying active in the game world over time.
- Shop Unlocks: Feathers can be spent in the in-game catalog to unlock more than 60 additional bird species. Prices range from 5 Feathers for small songbirds (such as Wrens or Tanagers) up to 500 Feathers for large raptors like the Harpy Eagle or Bald Eagle.
- Fossil and Prehistoric Birds: Birds costing over 500 Feathers generally consist of extinct or prehistoric creatures, such as the Dodo (1,000 Feathers), Argentavis (2,000 Feathers), Deinonychus (3,000 Feathers), and Harpagornis Skeleton (4,000 Feathers).
- Robux Game Passes: Mythical creatures cannot be bought with in-game Feathers. The Phoenix (400 Robux), Cockatrice (500 Robux), Griffin (600 Robux), and Peryton (600 Robux) require separate game passes. The Very Important Bird (VIB) pass (300 Robux) unlocks custom audio IDs, nest coloring, and roleplay server hosting.
Building Nests and Raising Offspring
One of the central mechanics in Feather Family is territory building and family roleplay.
Placing a Nest
Adult birds can open the Nest menu at the bottom of the screen to place down a home base. You can choose structural variations such as stick nests or rock nests. If you own the Very Important Bird game pass, you can also custom-color your nest materials.
If you travel far from your home, you can open the Nest menu and select the teleport option to return immediately to your nest.
Caring for Offspring
Once your nest is established, you can spawn an egg by selecting the Offspring option:
- Incubation: Sit directly on your egg in the nest to keep it warm until it reaches its hatching stage. You can cosmetic-crack or shake the egg via action prompts.
- Foraging Food: Forage for food items scattered across the environment, including worms from soil, berries from bushes, apples from trees, raw meat in the human village, and fish from lakes or coastal shallows.
- Feeding and Growth: Pick up edible items in your beak and drop them into the nest for your offspring to eat. Consuming food accelerates the chick's growth.
- Carrying Family Members: Adult birds can pick up smaller birds and chicks by clicking on them. Depending on size differences, you can carry them in your beak, on your back, or clutched in your talons.
Joining Flocks and Exploring Biomes
Feather Family is organized around player-run social groups and regional teleportation.
Flock Mechanics
Players can form or join groups called Flocks using the Flock tab on the interface. A flock provides dedicated group chat visible only to members, as well as name tags overhead denoting flock ranks.
- Flock Leaders: Can invite players, kick members, set a shared Flock Nest, lock flock recruitment to specific species, and send announcement broadcasts.
- Flock Members: Can instantly teleport to the designated flock base or directly to fellow flock members anywhere on the map.
Map Biomes
You can travel between regions naturally by flying or use the teleportation menu to jump directly to specific biomes:
- Village: Features human houses, grocery supplies, chicken pens, and urban perches.
- Forest & Sanctuary: Dense trees, elevated treehouses, and foraging grounds suitable for songbirds and woodland birds.
- Beach & Ocean: Coastal shorelines containing crabs, marine fish, and open water for aquatic and semi-aquatic birds.
- Desert & Volcano: Arid regions and magma chambers that serve as default spawn environments for select species like the Phoenix.
- Ice Mountain: Glacial caves, igloos, and frozen lakes populated by penguins and cold-climate birds.
- Skylands: Floating island platforms positioned high in the atmosphere, commonly used by mythical game pass species like the Griffin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I fly in Feather Family on PC?
Press Q on your keyboard to take off into the air. Aim your camera in the direction you want to glide, and press Q again when you want to fold your wings and land on the ground or a perch.
How do you get Feathers fast?
Feathers accumulate automatically into your balance the longer you remain logged in and active on a server. There are no minigames or manual grinding spots; staying active in roleplay will naturally build your currency pool to purchase new birds.
Can you play as mythical birds without Robux?
No. Mythical creatures—specifically the Phoenix, Cockatrice, Griffin, and Peryton—are locked behind permanent game passes purchased with Robux. All standard and prehistoric species, however, can be unlocked entirely for free using in-game Feathers.
Why cannot I fly as a penguin or ostrich?
Certain species in Feather Family are classified as flightless. Birds like the Emperor Penguin, Ostrich, Emu, Kiwi, and Cassowary cannot take flight when pressing the fly key, but they feature higher base running speeds on land or improved swimming physics in water.
